This movie is a bit of a waste – mainly of your time. Doesn’t really have any positive messages or redeeming qualities. It is annoying, though. In addition to the categories of violence, sex, language, consumerism, and drinking/drugs/smoking, there aught to be a category for sheer upsetting-ness/ sadness (and also maybe one for ugly behavior of characters – that’s why we don’t watch SpongeBob and Rugrats etc) . My husband turned on Mulan 2 for our daughter & himself while I ran some errands & to get a pizza. It looked stupid, but the commonsensemedia.org review did not make it seem THAT bad. Anyway, husband and I are talking in the dining room while daughter is watching the last ~25 minutes, and she runs in crying – I thought she had fallen off the couch and bumped her head at first, she was really crying hard (and she can be quite a squirrel – it’s happened before that she’s injured herself “just watching TV”). She was so upset at the apparent death of Shang that I couldn’t get her to stop crying even though I held her and hugged her and then gave her to her dad for hugs and immediately Googled “Mulan 2 Shang” and I was going to type in “dies” – but that was the top on the list, right abouve “Mulan 2 Shang not dead”. So, anyway, I am sorry for the rambling review, but I’d just like to say that we’d have warned her and/or stayed in the TV room with her if we’d known of this plot turn.
I found this sequel to be entertaining. My two daughters LOVE this one also. Our favorite scene is the one of the all the little girls in the village idolize Mulan and learn the yin and yang of being a warrior. Yes there are some scary moments and there is “fighting” but that’s all part of the typical, Disney formula. I found it educational as you get a glimpse of how Chinese culture is with daughters having to marry for duty and how they have conflicted feelings about what is expected and what they want to do. But Mulan balances that out as she is symbol of one who follows her heart, which is accepted by her parents and somewhat by Shang. You also see what compromise is and how to accept others for who they are too.
